Week of November 15

We would like to wish all of our families a very happy and restful break next week. We hope you enjoy the extra time with your little ones! Just a reminder that there is no school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. There will no blog next week.

🀎 What We Learned This Week πŸ€Ž

🀎Language Arts: Students participated in a reader's theater titled Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving. Be sure to ask your student what happened to the turkeys on Farmer MacNugget's Farm! They did a great job and had lots of fun this week with reading.

🀎Writing: Students completed the personal narrative writing about their Thanksgiving traditions (or another holiday if Thanksgiving is not celebrated at home). Stories will come home next week. Enjoy reading them!

🀎Math: Unit 3 continues to focus on addition and subtraction strategies. We are teaching students multiple strategies for each operation. Students will be able to use the strategy of their choice.

🀎Science:  Next week we begin our Animals Through Time Unit.

🀎Social Studies:  Chapter 2 test has been returned and we will take a short pause while we work on our next science unit.

*Be sure to check in with your child regarding the completion of independent reading books and book reports. If you have questions, this is a great topic to discuss at conferences.

We are still at approximately 5 students per class forgetting snack.  Again, we understand that this can happen from time to time, but we need your help. This forgetfulness is taking a toll on our resources and time. Please help your student prepare for school by packing a snack and water bottle.

November 8-12

We are already halfway through November! One of the things to look forward to this upcoming week is our Thanksgiving Lunch on Wednesday. Students will have the opportunity to enjoy a Thanksgiving Dinner for lunch, including turkey and other favorites at no cost. Click on this form if you are interested in volunteering.

Looking at the weather forecast for the upcoming week, it looks like the temperature is going to take a nosedive. Please make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess, including sending them with a winter coat, gloves, and hat.

🀎 What We Learned This Week πŸ€Ž

🀎Language Arts: This week, we focused on character traits. Students read a story about two different characters and completed a compare and contrast activity focused on their character traits. We also read "A Bad Case of Stripes," where students identified how Camilla's character traits changed from the beginning to the end of the story, using evidence from the text.

🀎Writing: We started a writing assignment where students are writing about their families' Thanksgiving Traditions. We are working on wrapping up our rough drafts before revising/editing and completing final drafts!

🀎Math: We completed our Unit 2 this week about area and multiplication. We have begun Unit 3, which is about multi-digit addition and subtraction. Next week, our focus will be on addition.

🀎Science:  We will be pausing our Science lessons as we have finished the first unit: Power of Flowers. Science resumes after the section of Social Studies that we have started.

🀎Social Studies:  This week, we finished Chapter 2 about the First People of Michigan. Our test is scheduled for Wednesday, November 17th. We completed a study guide in class this week that students can use to study at home. In addition, we also posted the study guide in a Seesaw message.

*Be sure to check in with your child regarding the completion of independent reading books and book reports. If you have questions, this is a great topic to discuss at conferences.

🀎 Snacks and Water Bottles πŸ€Ž

We are having approximately 7 kids per class per day that are forgetting to bring a snack and/or water bottle to school. In 3rd grade alone, that is 21 students. Students that forget a snack or water bottle are always given these items. This may be donations made to the office or it may be out of the teacher's own personal purchases for students. We understand that this can happen from time to time, but we need your help. This forgetfulness is taking a toll on our resources and time. Please help your student prepare for school by packing a snack and water bottle.

November 1 - 5

It's hard to believe that November is here already. We have some very special events happening this month. We look forward to our Thanksgiving luncheon, an extended break for Thanksgiving, and a couple half-days to finish up conferences. The fall weather is upon us so be sure your student has a warm coat for the playground. Many students are wanting to wear jackets in school. Please send a hoodie or sweater with your child so we can learn comfortably in the classroom and not get overheated.

🀎 What We Learned This Week πŸ€Ž

🀎Language Arts: This week, we concentrated on being reading detectives. Students were challenged to read passages and answer questions about the text. These CSA's (comprehension strategy assessments) train students to think about the text to find meaning and information. Going over these sheets at home help make reading a priority. Additionally, we read an informational book on turkeys. The students learned a great deal about turkeys!

🀎Writing: We are not quite ready to start a new reading unit so we wrote a few short paragraphs about turkeys. Look for the paragraphs in your student's blue folder!

🀎Math: Our study of area continues. We have now moved into rectilinear shapes where students must divide a shape into 2 or more rectangles. We continue to focus on multiplication to find the area of the shape.

🀎Science:  We will be pausing our Science lessons as we have finished the first unit: Power of Flowers. Science resumes after the section of Social Studies that we have started.

🀎Social Studies:  Our 5 themes tests were sent home and we are now starting chapter 2. We will learn about the first people to arrive in Michigan and learn how the Native American tribes lived life.

*Be sure to check in with your child regarding the completion of independent reading books and book reports. If you have questions, this is a great topic to discuss at conferences.
